tinyML Foundation Unveils Expanded Charter, New Partners, and a New Name, “EDGE AI FOUNDATION”

Rebrand highlights the organization’s comprehensive role in global innovation, collaboration, advocacy, and education for efficient, affordable, and scalable edge AI technologies.

Taipei, Taiwan. – EDGE AI FOUNDATION, a worldwide non-profit organization empowering a community of professionals, academia, and policymakers focused on a broad set of energy-efficient AI technologies including tinyML, edge AI, and on-device AI, announced an expanded charter and brand identity today at Taipei 2024.  Formerly known as the tinyML Foundation, the rebrand of EDGE AI FOUNDATION includes a new name, brand, website, initiatives, and partners to embrace the rapid innovation occurring daily in the AI and technology sectors, specifically connecting AI to the real world while also promoting sustainable and responsible practices.

“As edge AI technologies have evolved, so has our community,” said Executive Director of EDGE AI FOUNDATION, Pete Bernard. “Our rebrand is not just a new look; it’s a bold statement of our unwavering commitment to leading the future of edge AI. We are dedicated to empowering an ever-growing number of individuals through pioneering R&D, fostering collaboration across sectors, and engaging our vibrant community. This transformation underscores our mission to democratize edge AI, making it accessible and impactful for all.”

Founded in 2018, EDGE AI FOUNDATION began as a global community focused on bringing AI workloads from the cloud to the point of impact in sustainable and democratized ways. Today, it has grown to a worldwide community ecosystem that includes over 100 Fortune 500 technology companies, over 500,000 YouTube views, LinkedIn Followers, and Discord users, and over 100,000 individuals taking tinyML classes worldwide. Key partners include Qualcomm Technologies Inc., embedUR Systems Inc., and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation. The organization is thrilled to welcome four new partners: Wind River, Ceva Inc., Particle, and Alif Semiconductor.

“Wind River is excited to bring our long-standing expertise in real-time, mission-critical, and intelligent edge software to the Edge AI Foundation community,” said Avijit Sinha, Wind River President. “We see a tremendous opportunity to drive innovation with our comprehensive software portfolio, and lead alongside our ecosystem and foundation partners as we work to enable and advance AI at the edge.”

Other new EDGE AI FOUNDATION partners are also focused on what they can bring to the community and how they can help foster real-world innovation. “We look forward to bringing our deep knowledge in edge AI inference, connectivity, and sensing to the community and helping advance the edge AI industry to bring valuable solutions to market,” said Ira Trashanski, Chief Strategy Officer at Ceva.

With a focus on the developer side of the community, Reza Kazerounian, President & Co-Founder at Alif Semiconducter said, “Since our inception, Alif has been working toward bringing secure, low-power, high-performance edge AI-enabled microcontrollers to embedded developers. We look forward to collaborating with foundation members on next-generation AI platforms and products.”

In addition to the EDGE AI FOUNDATION’s brand and name change, the organization is also introducing two new initiatives to support its community of innovators, including:

EDGE AI LABS:

  • The EDGE AI FOUNDATION is launching a new platform powered by embedUR Systems Inc. that offers freely available high-quality datasets, models, and code to accelerate edge AI research, development, and deployment. Curated by EDGE AI FOUNDATION working groups, this platform will provide high-quality resources and a global channel for innovation.
  • This new effort will embrace edge AI technologies from tinyML to Generative AI. As it has swept over cloud computing platforms to transform content creation and human engagement, we expect Generative AI to take sensor-based edge platforms to the next level – from AI vision and visual language models to small language models embedded in equipment that is in the field – the EDGE AI FOUNDATION will be “the place” to bring together academia, industry, and technology to make Generative AI on the edge real, make it efficient and make it deployable.

EDGE AIP (ACADEMIA & INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP):

  • The EDGE AIP consists of leading educators from around the world developing a bridge between academic institutions and industry partners, including new education initiatives for knowledge certification, management of EDGE AI FOUNDATION’s new scholarship fund to support the development of edge AI teaching skills, and internship, mentoring programs, and awards to cultivate the next generation of AI experts and leadership.
  • This initiative also includes a partnership with the Krach Institute of Tech Diplomacy at Purdue. and its new Tech Diplomacy Academy. The Tech Diplomacy Academy will also become a scholarship partner for the EDGE AI FOUNDATION, and together they are planning to co-develop edge AI educational materials for U.S. and global policy makers, including the State Department.

Today’s announcement coincides with EDGE AI FOUNDATION’s Taipei 2024 event, dedicated to the future of AI and edge computing. This year’s theme, “TinyML Drives AI Everywhere,” focuses on the transformative impact of tiny machine learning (TinyML) technologies across various industries.
